Harmonic Saturation: Soft-Clipping and Analog Warmth via Hysteresis

Digital clipping occurs when a signal exceeds 0 dBFS, resulting in harsh, square-wave distortion that quickly causes listener fatigue. Magnetic tape, however, saturates gradually through a physical process known as hysteresis. As an incoming audio signal gets louder, the magnetic particles on the tape reach their storage limit, naturally rounding off harsh transient peaks.

Driven Tone and Harmonic Density

Wowow’s saturation engine models magnetic hysteresis to deliver progressive harmonic generation and soft-knee compression without requiring external limiter plugins.

  1. In Gain Drive: The In Gain knob acts as your primary drive control. By pushing more gain into Wowow’s tape head circuit, you force the virtual magnetic particles to saturate faster.
  2. Heat (Saturation Control): The Heat dial dictates the density of the saturation circuit. Lower settings introduce warm, subtle second-order harmonics, while higher settings push the audio into thick, crunchy distortion reminiscent of overdriven console preamps.
  3. Out Gain Compensation: Because tape saturation inherently adds gain, you can use the Out Gain knob to attenuate the signal back down, ensuring fair A/B volume comparisons.

Where to Use Tape Saturation

  • Snare Drums and Cymbals: High-frequency transients from drums often cause harsh digital spikes. Pushing them through Wowow rounds off the transient tips, making drums sound punchier, louder, and smoother.
  • Thickening Bass Guitars: Low-end instruments gain upper-harmonic presence when saturated, allowing basslines to remain clear and audible even on small smartphone or laptop speakers.
  • Glueing Lead Vocals: Gentle saturation thickens thin vocal recordings, helping them cut through dense instrumental arrangements naturally.
